Despite its name, the Behringer Bass Brassmaster does not emulate brass instruments and isn't exclusively for bass guitarists. So, what is this oddly named pedal really about?
In the early days of effects, the distinctive square wave “clipping” effect we now all know and love as “Fuzz” was sometimes marketed as a “brass effect” by early pedal makers. At the time, “Fuzz Bass” effects (like “Think for Yourself” by the Beatles) were as common as guitar players using a Fuzz effect--and this one is great for both. That explains the crazy name, but what makes this Fuzz so different?
The Behringer Bass Brassmaster nails the aggressive grind, ring-mod madness, and unusually well-defined chaos behind the most desired and unique octave-fuzz pedal of the 70s. Naturally, vintage examples are tricky to find and challenging to afford. Like the rest of Behringer’s meticulously reborn classics, the Brassmaster is affordable and available to all guitarists and bassists with a taste for experimentation.
Like the original, the massive wall of Fuzz sound is tempered with a clean signal that adds definition to your sound. Using the “Brass” knob, dial in everything from distortion to ripping, saturated Fuzz. Then adjust the “Sensitivity” to mix dial in the perfect mix of your clean and dirty signal to add mix-cutting definition without sacrificing Fuzz effect intensity. Use the “Brass” toggle to select a wholly and scooped sound (position 1) and a mix-busting midrange heavy grind (position 2). A separate dial for output (“Bass” volume) lets you set for unity gain or boost. Already an awesome Fuzz, the Brassmaster has even more to explore. The Harmonic toggle adds an old-school analog upper or lower octave to your primary signal. In position 1, explore red-hot and nasty octave-up effects loved by Jimmi Hendrix. Toggle down to position 2 for a deep and sputtering low-octave effect, like those used by Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.
